Ontario Heat Pump Rebates: What’s Available in 2026
Ontario’s current province-wide offer is the Home Renovation Savings program. Eligible air-source projects can receive up to seven thousand five hundred dollars; eligible ground-source work can receive up to twelve thousand dollars. Capacity affects the air-source amount, and the indoor-and-outdoor equipment combination must appear on the applicable qualified-product list.
The former federal grant is no longer open
Natural Resources Canada stopped accepting new Canada Greener Homes Grant applicants in February 2024. Pages that still present it as an available $5,000 offer are outdated. NRCan maintains an official notice for the ended program.
What to confirm before signing
Ask which exact model combination qualifies, how capacity affects the incentive, whether an assessment or pre-approval is required, what documents you must keep and who is responsible for each submission. Rules can change, so rely on current official terms instead of an old promotion or estimate.
Choosing the Right Heat Pump for Your Home
Air-Source vs. Ground-Source
Air-source heat pumps account for over 90% of residential installations in Ontario. They are more affordable, require no excavation, and modern cold climate models perform exceptionally well. This is what we install most often and recommend for the vast majority of GTA homes.
Ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps offer the highest efficiency but cost $20,000–$40,000+ due to ground loop installation. For most Mississauga homes, air-source is the practical choice.
Hybrid and Dual-Fuel Systems
If you already have a gas furnace in good condition, a hybrid system pairs a heat pump with your existing furnace. The heat pump handles heating down to around -10°C to -15°C, and the furnace kicks in during the coldest stretches. You get most of the energy savings while keeping a proven backup. Cold Climate Considerations

They can be a strong fit when the equipment is properly sized and its low-temperature performance matches the home. The practical comparison should include current energy rates, the existing system, cooling needs, backup heat, comfort goals, installed cost and any rebate for which the equipment actually qualifies.
Square footage alone isn’t enough. A load calculation considers the building envelope, window area, air leakage, duct airflow and Mississauga’s design temperatures. You’ll also need the chosen model’s actual output in cold weather; nominal tonnage doesn’t show how much heating capacity remains when outdoor temperatures fall.
Many straightforward residential replacements can be completed in one or two days. Duct changes, electrical upgrades, new line routing, hybrid controls, permits or difficult access can add time. The written quote should explain the expected sequence and what could affect the schedule.

Some cold-climate models are designed to operate at −20°C and below, but operation and useful heating capacity are not the same thing. Check the model’s published capacity and efficiency at low temperatures, then size the system and backup strategy for the home rather than relying on a single minimum-temperature claim.
A furnace creates heat by burning fuel or using electric resistance. A heat pump uses electricity and a refrigerant cycle to transfer heat. It reverses in summer to provide cooling, while a furnace provides heating only.
A heat pump works in both heating and cooling seasons, so a spring and fall professional check is a practical schedule for many homes. Filter and homeowner-maintenance intervals depend on the equipment and household; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and address unusual noise, icing or comfort changes promptly.
Sound varies by model, operating speed, installation and placement. Compare the manufacturer’s published sound rating and discuss setbacks from bedrooms, neighbours and property lines. A solid base, correct clearances and proper commissioning also help prevent avoidable vibration and noise.
It can in some homes when the heat pump and electrical system are sized for the full heating load. Other homes are better suited to a hybrid system that uses a heat pump for most conditions and a furnace for backup. The decision should follow a home assessment and low-temperature capacity review.
