1. Signs Your Furnace May Need Replacement

Recognizing the signs that it’s time to replace your furnace is essential for maintaining comfort and efficiency. Some common indicators include:

– Age: A furnace typically lasts 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is nearing or has surpassed this age range, it’s likely time to consider a replacement.

– Increasing energy bills: As a furnace ages, it can become less energy-efficient, leading to increased energy consumption and higher utility bills.

– Frequent repairs: Constantly needing to perform repairs on your furnace can be expensive and inconvenient. If you find yourself consistently repairing your furnace, it may be more cost-effective to replace the unit.

– Inconsistent heating: Old or malfunctioning furnaces can cause uneven or fluctuating temperatures in your home, leading to discomfort for you and your family.

– Unusual noises: Strange noises, such as rattling, banging, or squeaking, can indicate that your furnace is struggling or experiencing issues that may warrant replacement.

2. Advantages of Upgrading to a New Furnace

Replacing an old or inefficient furnace with a newer, energy-efficient model offers several benefits:

– Increased efficiency: Newer furnaces offer improved energy-efficiency ratings, helping to reduce your energy consumption and lower utility bills.

– Enhanced comfort: Modern furnaces provide more consistent and precise temperature control, ensuring a comfortable living environment.

– Improved indoor air quality: New furnaces often feature advanced filtration systems, reducing allergens, pollutants, and dust in your home.

– Reduced repair costs: A new furnace typically requires fewer repairs, saving you money and inconvenience over time.

In this comprehensive post, we explore key factors to consider when choosing a suitable furnace for your Canadian home, emphasizing energy efficiency, performance, and reliability. Additionally, we highlight how Furnace King Home Services’s expert team can support you every step of the way – from assessing your home’s heating needs and recommending appropriate furnace models to professional installation and ongoing maintenance.

By understanding critical considerations in selecting a furnace and partnering with Furnace King Home Services, you can create a warm, cozy, and energy-efficient home that keeps your family comfortable throughout the coldest winter months.

Energy Efficiency and AFUE Rating

One of the most important aspects to consider when shopping for a furnace is its energy efficiency, measured by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. The AFUE rating represents the percentage of fuel converted into heat, with a higher rating indicating better energy efficiency.

In Canada, a minimum AFUE rating of 90% for gas furnaces is required, while some high-efficiency models can reach ratings of 97% or more. Choosing a furnace with a higher AFUE rating leads to lower energy bills and reduced environmental impact over time.

Furnace Types and Fuel Options

Furnaces come in various types and use different fuel sources, which can influence your decision:

1. Natural Gas Furnaces

Natural gas furnaces are common in Canadian homes due to their cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency. They are a convenient and popular option for homeowners with access to natural gas lines.

2. Propane Furnaces

For residents without access to natural gas, propane furnaces offer an alternative heating solution. These furnaces use propane gas stored in a tank on the property. While propane is generally more expensive than natural gas, propane furnaces still provide efficient heating for homes.

3. Oil Furnaces

Oil furnaces rely on oil as the fuel source, typically stored in an external tank and delivered periodically. Although oil furnaces can provide substantial heat output, they are generally less energy-efficient and require more maintenance than gas and propane furnaces.

4. Electric Furnaces

Electric furnaces use electricity to generate heat, making them an eco-friendly option if powered by renewable energy sources. Electric furnaces may be more expensive to operate, but they typically require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan. If you are considering electric heat, it is also worth comparing a furnace with a heat pump; our heat pump vs. furnace guide covers efficiency, comfort and cost for Mississauga-area homes.

Furnace Size and Capacity

When selecting a furnace, it’s crucial to choose the right size that aligns with your home’s heating needs. An inadequately sized furnace can lead to uneven heating, reduced comfort, and higher energy consumption. A professional HVAC technician can assess your home’s heating requirements, taking into account factors such as square footage, insulation, and climate, and providing recommendations on the appropriate furnace size and capacity.

Warranty and Support

Investing in a furnace with a solid warranty, offering protection in case of any issues or malfunctions, is another crucial factor. Make sure to choose a reputable manufacturer that provides a comprehensive warranty for parts and labour. Additionally, partnering with a reliable and trusted company like Furnace King Home Services ensures ongoing support, maintenance, and repair services, giving you peace of mind of knowing your investment is well taken care of.

Importance of Regular Furnace Maintenance

1. Improved Energy Efficiency

A well-maintained furnace operates at peak efficiency, consuming less energy to produce the same level of warmth. Regular maintenance ensures that all components are running smoothly, resulting in lower energy bills and a reduced environmental footprint.

2. Prolonged Furnace Lifespan

Investing time and effort into regular furnace maintenance can significantly extend the life of your heating system. Properly maintained furnaces encounter fewer issues and require fewer repairs over their lifetime, ensuring a longer-lasting and more reliable heating solution.

3. Reduced Risk of Breakdowns

Regular maintenance helps identify and address potential issues before they escalate, reducing the risk of sudden breakdowns during the cold winter months when your furnace is needed most. This proactive approach minimizes inconveniences and ensures your home stays warm and comfortable.

4. Enhanced Indoor Air Quality

A well-maintained furnace promotes improved indoor air quality by ensuring proper air filtration and circulation. Clean filters and ducts prevent the accumulation of dust and allergens, creating a healthier and more comfortable living environment.

Furnace Maintenance Tips

1. Regularly Change Air Filters

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain your furnace’s performance is regularly changing or cleaning its air filters. Dirty filters can reduce your furnace’s efficiency, increase energy consumption, and lead to poor indoor air quality. Depending on your furnace type and usage, it’s recommended to change or clean filters every one to three months.

2. Keep the Furnace Area Clean

Ensure that the area around your furnace is clean and free of debris or clutter. This practice not only ensures proper airflow but also minimizes the risk of fire hazards. Regularly inspect and clean the furnace’s blower assembly, pulleys, and belts to ensure smooth operation.

3. Schedule an Annual Inspection

An annual professional furnace inspection by a licensed technician is essential to guarantee the longevity and efficiency of your heating system. A comprehensive inspection includes the assessment of system components, such as the heat exchanger, ignition system, venting system, and fuel connections, providing homeowners with peace of mind knowing their furnace is operating safely and efficiently.

4. Monitor Your Thermostat

Regularly monitoring and adjusting your thermostat settings can positively impact your furnace’s efficiency and overall energy consumption. Consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust temperature settings based on your lifestyle and daily routines, ensuring optimal energy use and comfort.

Routine maintenance checks can prevent costly components from wearing out prematurely, allowing you to maximize your furnace’s efficiency and service life.

Regular furnace maintenance ensures that all components are operating correctly, making certain that your furnace achieves optimal energy efficiency. Identifying Signs Your Furnace May Need Repairs

1. Uneven Heating

If you notice that certain areas in your home are not adequately heated, it could be an indication that your furnace is not functioning efficiently. Uneven heating points towards potential issues with the furnace’s blower motor, damaged ductwork, or a thermostat malfunction, each requiring prompt repairs to restore proper performance.

2. Unusual Noises

Furnaces will naturally produce some sound while operating. However, if you begin to notice unusual noises, such as banging, grinding, or whistling, this could signify a potential issue. Prompt inspections and repairs by a certified technician can help prevent further damage to your furnace and ensure its continued efficient operation.

3. Rising Energy Costs

An unexpected increase in your energy bill might indicate that your furnace is consuming more energy than usual to maintain the desired temperature. This could be due to various factors, including a dirty or clogged filter, malfunctioning components, or inefficiencies in the heating system. Scheduling a maintenance check with Furnace King Home Services can pinpoint the root cause of the issue and rectify it.

Maximizing Furnace Efficiency with Furnace King Home Services’s Tips

Furnace King Home Services recommends replacing or cleaning your air filter every 1-3 months, depending on the filter type and your household’s specific needs.

2. Seal and Insulate Your Home

Improving your home’s insulation and sealing air leaks can help reduce the amount of work your furnace must perform to maintain a comfortable temperature. With our guidance and knowledge, you can confidently invest in a heating solution that ultimately saves you money, reduces energy waste, and contributes to a more eco-friendly and comfortable home for you and your family.

Understanding High-Efficiency Furnaces

1. Energy Efficiency Ratings

The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating measures the efficiency of a furnace by calculating the percentage of energy converted into heat. A high-efficiency furnace typically has an AFUE rating of 90% or higher, which indicates that at least 90% of the fuel consumed is converted into heat for your home. In comparison, older furnaces may have an AFUE rating as low as 60% or 70%. Upgrading to a high-efficiency furnace can result in significant energy and cost savings while reducing your home’s greenhouse gas emissions.

2. Advanced Technology and Design

High-efficiency furnaces incorporate advanced technologies and design features to optimize their performance and energy efficiency. Some common features include condensing technology, sealed combustion, electronic ignition, and variable-speed blowers. These advances ensure that your furnace consumes less fuel while providing more consistent and comfortable heat to your living spaces.

3. Increased Comfort

Aside from energy efficiency, high-efficiency furnaces can also improve the overall comfort of your home by providing more even heat distribution and better air filtration. Features like variable-speed blowers and modulating burners adjust their output levels more precisely to maintain consistent temperature levels throughout your living space, while advanced filter systems enhance indoor air quality by trapping more dust, allergens, and contaminants.

Selecting the Right High-Efficiency Furnace

1. Sizing and Capacity

Choosing the correct furnace size is crucial to achieving optimal comfort, energy efficiency, and longevity for your heating system. A furnace that is too small will struggle to heat your home effectively, while an oversized furnace may cycle on and off frequently, decreasing its efficiency and causing unnecessary wear and tear. The professionals at Furnace King Home Services can help you determine the appropriate furnace size for your home by performing a thorough load calculation, which accounts for factors such as square footage, insulation, and climate.

2. Additional Features and Options

When investing in a high-efficiency furnace, consider additional features and options that may enhance the comfort and efficiency of your heating system. For example, a two-stage or modulating gas valve can provide more precise temperature control and enhanced energy efficiency. Likewise, a variable-speed blower motor can improve comfort by circulating air more consistently and quietly. Consult with Furnace King Home Services’ experts to identify which features align best with your needs and budget.

3. Brands and Warranties

Reputable furnace manufacturers uphold high standards for quality, reliability, and energy efficiency. Furnace King Home Services offers a selection of top-quality, high-efficiency furnaces from leading brands, ensuring that your investment provides lasting performance and peace of mind. Additionally, most high-efficiency furnaces come with comprehensive warranties that cover key components and parts, further protecting your investment.

Professional Installation and Maintenance

1. Expert Installation

Proper installation is vital to ensure that your high-efficiency furnace operates at peak performance levels. Working with Furnace King Home Services’ trained technicians guarantees precise sizing, appropriate ductwork design, and attention to safety measures, ensuring a seamless and efficient installation process that upholds manufacturer guidelines and industry standards.

2. Regular Maintenance

Routine maintenance is essential to prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of your high-efficiency furnace. Furnace King Home Services’ experienced professionals can provide comprehensive maintenance services, including inspections, cleaning, and component checks, to keep your heating system running smoothly and efficiently. Adhering to a regular maintenance schedule can save you money in the long run by preventing costly repairs and extending the lifespan of your furnace.

Conclusion

5 Tips For Choosing The Best Furnace Installer

1337085310

The short answer: choose a furnace installer that is registered with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), Ontario’s fuel safety regulator. It should also assess your home in person before quoting, put the scope of work and the warranty in writing, and point you to customers it has worked for in your area. The sections below show you how to check each one.

Why the Installer Matters as Much as the Furnace

Installing a new furnace is a big decision, especially since installation is the single most important variable in how well the new furnace performs.

When you compare furnaces, it’s easy to look only at the equipment and the manufacturer specifications. The problem is that if your installer doesn’t do a proper installation, you may never get the unit’s quoted performance in the first place. Bad installation can quickly turn a top-of-the-line, high-efficiency furnace into a very expensive under-performer.

That’s why install day is the most important day of your new furnace’s life, and why it pays to be particular about who you hire.

So how do you know you’ve found the best installation company? There is no single test. Making sure the company and its workers are licensed professionals is an important first step, but a licence on its own does not guarantee quality workmanship or thoroughness. Instead, look at a combination of things, seen mostly in the way the company behaves.

First, Confirm the Company Is Registered

In Ontario, work on gas furnaces is regulated. TSSA says only TSSA-registered fuels contractors can legally do fuels-related work in the province, and it publishes a searchable list of registered fuels contractors where you can find or verify a company’s registration. TSSA also certifies the technicians who install and service this equipment, so it’s reasonable to ask which certified technician will do your job.

Furnace King Home Services (2587905 Ontario Inc.) is on that list as a TSSA registered fuels contractor, registration number 000298169, for natural gas and liquid propane. You can look us up the same way you would check any other company.

A registration check takes a few minutes and tells you whether the company is registered with TSSA, though TSSA notes that its list is not an endorsement or referral. It doesn’t tell you how a company treats its customers, which is what the five tips below are for.

5 Tips: Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Furnace Installer

1. Do they give quotes over the phone?

A trustworthy installer won’t give you a firm price without seeing your home. Many homeowners like the convenience of a quick quote over the phone, but nobody can know what a job will really cost without visiting the property. Some companies will tell you a number you want to hear, and then on install day the price creeps up as complications appear, or corners get cut to hit the price promised over the phone.

TSSA’s qualified contractor checklist, which draws on red flags highlighted by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), says qualified contractors won’t quote prices over the phone without first assessing your job on site. It also reminds homeowners that the lowest price isn’t always the best value, which is why you shouldn’t simply choose the lowest bidder.

A quality installer will visit your property, assess what your home needs and then present you with options to reach your goals. They will also explain your new heating system so you understand how it operates.

2. Do they guarantee their work?

Most furnaces come with manufacturer warranties that cover faulty parts, but those warranties don’t cover problems with the installation. You can run into trouble with a furnace when nothing is wrong with the equipment itself, and then it’s up to the installer, not the manufacturer, to make it right. Without a guarantee, you could be left paying for repairs if your installer decides it’s not their problem.

A good installation company guarantees its work above and beyond the manufacturer’s warranty, and puts that guarantee in writing. A guarantee shows confidence in the workmanship and tells you the company will still be there after install day.

3. What have their past customers said about them?

Look for testimonials from satisfied customers, and check review sites such as HomeStars and Google where customers can leave honest reviews, good or bad. The checklist adds that qualified contractors will be happy to offer the names and addresses of customers they have worked for in your area.

It’s a good sign when customers go out of their way to say good things. A company that stays visible on sites where bad reviews are possible is showing confidence in its ability to keep customers happy.

4. Are they available when you need them?

If something goes wrong, can you reach them? A company with 24/7 emergency service gives you peace of mind after a furnace installation, because you know you can get help with a problem even outside regular office hours. It’s even better when real people answer the phone around the clock, rather than an automated service.

Also ask for a full business address and telephone number where the company can be reached. That checklist lists this among the signs of a qualified contractor.

5. Do you feel comfortable with them?

There’s a lot to be said for gut feelings. If a company has been to your home for an assessment, ask yourself, “Do I trust them?” People are generally good at spotting when someone is being insincere. If you don’t feel confident that they’ll deliver what they promise, they aren’t the right fit for you.

Red Flags When Hiring a Furnace Installer in Ontario

Beyond the five tips, watch for these warning signs:

  • An unsolicited door-to-door offer. Under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act rules, furnaces and air conditioners, among other home comfort products, can’t be offered or sold at your home unless you initiated the transaction, for example by calling a business and asking it to visit. There are some exceptions, such as when you already have a contract with the business. The Ontario government explains the rules on its page about door-to-door sales and home service contracts.
  • A large cash advance before any equipment arrives. The TSSA checklist says qualified contractors don’t request large cash advances before delivering equipment or materials.
  • Signing on the spot. If you sign a furnace contract at your home, Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act gives you a 10-day cooling-off period, starting the day you receive a written copy of the agreement, to cancel for any reason. You may still owe some costs if you asked for the equipment to be installed before the 10 days are over, so read the contract first.
  • A quote that is vague about the work. If you can’t tell which equipment, labour and warranty are included, ask for it in writing before you decide.

What a Good Furnace Installation Quote Should Spell Out

Whoever you choose, ask for a written quote after an in-home assessment. It should cover:

  • The make, model and efficiency rating of the furnace being installed
  • The full scope of work, including venting, gas and electrical connections, the thermostat and removal of the old furnace
  • Any ductwork changes the assessment found necessary
  • Parts and labour warranty terms, in writing and separate from the manufacturer’s warranty
  • The total price and the payment schedule

Comparing two or three quotes line by line is the easiest way to see why one costs less than another. Sometimes the cheaper quote simply leaves something out.

Replacing Your Furnace This Winter?

280514307

It’s getting colder by the day in the Greater Toronto Area and the mercury has been dropping below zero with increasing frequency, especially at night.

If it has been a while since the last time you had a professional, licensed technician give your furnace the attention it needs, you may be in for a very cold, very uncomfortable experience this winter.

Because furnaces are running for almost half the year in Toronto, they need to be maintained and tuned up regularly or else they could fail when you need them most. There’s nothing worse than having your furnace die in the dead of winter and having to bare the freezing cold while having it replaced.

Add on top of that the risk of freezing pipes and you can see how waiting until the freezing winter to replace your furnace quickly goes from something you can take your time with to make the right choice, to a stressful emergency.

If your furnace isn’t performing like the day it was installed, or if you’ve noticed particular problems with it, now is the best time to make sure it will be able to handle the coming cold.

We’ve already talked about choosing the right contractor, and a professional, trustworthy furnace technician will be able to recommend whether or not your furnace needs to be replaced.

Now, before it gets too cold, is the best time to make sure your furnace can keep you warm this winter, because if you don’t ask your furnace if it has another winter in it, you can be sure it will let you know.

Everyone has heard that old saying before but not everyone understands how to save money by switching to a high-efficiency furnace when they’ve got an older model that’s been in the basement for years. If that’s your situation, read these financial advantages in favour of the high efficiency models.

First off, these furnaces have a high Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. In fact these ‘latest innovations’ have a rating of 90% or more and that means most of the natural gas that it burns is converted to heat. Translation? You spend less on that fuel type.

These are what’s called two stage models. With two levels of heating power and two levels of fan blower speeds, these high efficiency furnaces only work as hard as they need to. That means you save on the fuel burned and the electricity to run the unit.

High efficiency furnaces often come with secondary heat exchangers that are highly efficient and cut heating costs further.

Finally, you can save money by switching to a high efficiency furnace by virtue of the fuel used. Natural gas is abundant and found domestically, so it’s considered one of the best choices.
